Feel like you suck at voiceover?

It doesn’t matter.

Your frustration is real. But the lack of growth isn’t.

If you have been coaching, if you’ve been practicing, I’ll bet you that you HAVE grown. It’s just invisible to you.

If we inaccurately judge the amount of effort we expend on our careers, it’s no wonder we feel stuck, disempowered, and confused about why the results aren’t coming.

Measure your data…so you can manage it!

The truth is, when you really break it down, there's a very simple formula for this business. And if you learn to recognize which step you're on, you can figure out what your next step is much faster.

Voiceover is Not Your Sugar Daddy

February 13, 2022 in Business, Voiceover, articles

Dear voiceover hopefuls:

VOICEOVER IS NOT YOUR SUGAR DADDY.

Voiceover is super attractive and still pretty well off, so voiceover has lots of options.

Just because you have a “nice voice,” doesn’t mean it’s going to buy you jewelry and pay for expensive dinners every night. In fact, it doesn’t do that for many people.

Voiceover has had its share of wannabes, trying to woo it with a “nice voice.”

Voiceover might become smitten with you right off the bat, but that doesn’t usually last long.

To develop a serious relationship, it’s going to want to know you’re committed.

Will you…?

Voiceover might ask you to:

  • Change your habits. Voiceover thinks you should take better care of yourself. At least drink more water and go to sleep earlier to start.

  • Invest in your relationship. Making purchases that will strengthen your bond and show you are serious. Buying a Sennheiser MKH416 might be the VO equivalent of “putting a ring on it.”

  • Set up house together. If you haven’t allowed voiceover to do more than leave a toothbrush at your place, how committed are you? If you want a long term relationship with voiceover, then start by at least giving it some closet space!

  • Work on your communication. Taking classes to work on scripts is important, but so is learning how to write a mean cold email and form business relationships.

  • Meet its family and friends—you know, like agents, casting directors, coaches, other long-time voice actors…the people who have been there for voiceover for years and really care about its future.

  • Continue to improve yourself. Voiceover likes people who challenge themselves and continue to learn and grow.

  • Be more authentic. Voiceover does not care about a “nice voice.” A nice voice is fine. But more than that, voiceover wants to believe what you’re saying.

If you still want to woo voiceover, remember:

There are plenty of fish in the voiceover sea.

Voiceover does not need you.

If you want voiceover, you’re going to have to do the work to make it want you.

Until next week!

Billie Jo
